From the 74th Nintendo Annual General Shareholders Meeting: Mario Kart 8 sells 2 million, Iwata re-elected President

Yesterday, Nintendo held a general shareholders meeting, where Nintendo EAD general manager Genyo Takeda spoke on behalf of boss Satoru Iwata, who was unable to attend due to a recent surgery. At the meeting, Nintendo announced that it had sold just over 2 million copies of Mario Kart 8 in just under a month, while a general majority of shareholders voted to re-elect Iwata as president. He was recently absent from 2014’s annual E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) but was featured in the company’s Digital Event where it announced a ton of new games.

Being re-elected President is comforting for Iwata, whose approval rating from shareholders was as high as 92% in 2011, dipped to 73% last year. Nintendo hasn’t released his approval rating this year yet, but that means Iwata will stay as president for at least another year. If he doesn’t do much to save the company, there might be a chance he won’t be re-elected next year.
