Super Mario Bros. speedrun breaks the world record
Speedrunner Blubbler has broken the speedrun record of 4.58.09 in this classic game, thanks to a new glitch in 8-2 which skips the post-flagpole animation, the world record is now 40 miliseconds shorter at 4.57.69!
Anyway, if you’d like to watch the run, you can watch it here.
However, the world record for completing the game is 4.57.31, which was done as a TAS or tool-assisted speedrun. TAS isn’t a normal speedrun - it uses emulators, save states, slowdown and other things that simply won’t be possible on a standard console. However, it means even the tiniest mistakes take just seconds to solve instead of having to restart the entire game. Emulators also do re-record so that only the best attempt out of many save states is taken. That run can be watched here.
