Splatoon developers play Call of Duty and Battlefield in their spare time

The team developing Splatoon (2015, Wii U) was recently interviewed by Kotaku and some of them admit to playing FPS games like Call of Duty and Battlefield, sometimes on rival platforms.

For example, when I asked Nogami and Sakaguchi about other shooters like Call of Duty and Battlefield, Nogami said, “We definitely play those types of games,” adding “There’s definitely guys on our staff who are super into shooters. We definitely play other games and other company’s hardware. We do that as part of our jobs and we also do that because we’re gamers and love to play games.”

Nintendo investor flabbergasted Iwata has not resigned

“I, for one, was flabbergasted that Mr. Iwata continues to hold his position although he had said that he would resign if the company’s performance were bad.”

That’s what a Nintendo investor told Game Informer after attending the Nintendo Shareholders Meeting. This news comes just a day after another investor said he didn’t even understand video games and didn’t want the meetings to be about games, but instead more about money. A tad greedy, don’t you think.

Miyamoto hestitant to call Zelda Wii U “open world”

“I prefer not to use the generally used term “open world” when developing software, but we used this term [at E3] in order to make it easier for consumers to understand. This term means that there is a large world in which players can do numerous things daily.”

It means that the E3 Zelda we got, while it seemed open enough, might not be too open. We’ll know more as the game’s 2015 release date nears, but keep it tuned here to find out more.

Update with a new quote: “In the traditional “The Legend of Zelda” series, the player would play one dungeon at a time. For example, if there are eight dungeons, at the fourth dungeon, some players may think, “I’m already halfway through the game,” while other players may think, “I still have half of the game to play.” We are trying to gradually break down such mechanism and develop a game style in which you can enjoy “The Legend of Zelda” freely in...

Miyamoto wanted Pac-Man in Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS

Smash director Masahiro Sakurai revealed to Famitsu that Miyamoto wanted Pac-Man in the next iterations of his famous fighting game. While at the time he thought the idea was too far-fetched, the round, yellow guy did eventually make it.

“During development of Smash Bros. Brawl, Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo approached me and asked, ‘Can’t we have Pac-Man as a guest character?’” Sakurai recalled. “At the time, imagining the image of Pac-Man and his incomplete pizza shape, I thought to myself, ‘Hmmm… That’s a little too farfetched.’”

Miyamoto wants next 3DS Zelda to be non-linear, again

Famed video game creator Shigeru Miyamoto says he has some ideas for the next 3DS Zelda, saying that he wants it to be non-linear, like A Link Between Worlds and Zelda Wii U. Here’s his full speech/quote:

“This term [open world] means that there is a large world in which players can do numerous things daily. In the traditional “The Legend of Zelda” series, the player would play one dungeon at a time. For example, if there are eight dungeons, at the fourth dungeon, some players may think, “I’m already halfway through the game,” while other players may think, “I still have half of the game to play.” We are trying to gradually break down such mechanism and develop a game style in which you can enjoy “The Legend of Zelda” freely in a vast world, whenever you find the time to do so.”

“We created the games in the traditional “The Legend of Zelda” series in steps that players could easily...

EA COO explains why it makes more games for iOS and Android than 3DS and Vita

Electronic Arts COO Peter Moore has explained why his company doesn’t bring as many games to the 3DS and Vita as it does to mobile giants iOS and Android. He believes that even software giants like his company still have finite resources and that the 3DS and Vita only have a few more years ahead of them, while the games on mobile will be playable for a very long time.

“We were supportive of both of those platforms, but then you’ve got finite resources and you’ve got teams that say, ‘We really think that two or three years from now, these are the platforms that people are going to be consuming games on.’ And you look at the quality of what you can do on phones and tablets… Sometimes strategy is not about what you do but what you don’t do, and you have to make some hard calls when you’ve got only so many people. To my point, we’ve got to be planning for FY 17 and 18. Do you think the Vita...

Nintendo talks about Wii U’s software droughts

In an interview with IGN, NoA president Reggie Fils-Aime talked about how Nintendo is dealing with software droughts where no major titles are released for its latest console. Catch the full conversation below:

IGN: One of the common patterns we keep seeing with Nintendo is a long gap between major games. We got Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze in February, but didn’t have another big game until Mario Kart 8. What is Nintendo doing to alleviate the software droughts between game releases?

Fils-Aime: “We’re doing a couple of things. First, we’re doing much more second-party development. Everything from Bayonetta 2, which is an exclusive to Wii U game, Devil’s Third is an exclusive to Wii U game. Certainly, leveraging more second-party development is critical to us. The other thing we’re doing is much more with independent developers. And I would argue that this is a big industry shift that’s...

Reggie admits Nintendo didn’t have enough games ready for the Wii U launch

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has admitted to IGN that Nintendo failed to prepare enough games for the launch of its latest console and as a result, didn’t have enough momentum. He stated that he believed games like Zelda: Wind Waker HD, Super Mario 3D World and Pikmin 3 should have been available at or just after launch. However, that didn’t happen, as TWW HD didn’t launch until September 2013, 3D World didn’t launch until November and Pikmin 3 until August last year.

“What I would say is that we have been slower than we wanted to be in bringing the key games into the marketplace that leveraged the full functionality of the system.”

“Just look at the games that we launched over the last nine months. Everything from Super Mario 3D World to Wii Fit U. Let’s include Pikmin 3 in that group. Let’s include Zelda [Wind Waker] in that group. These are all games that we wanted...
