Iwata’s approval rating up from last year

Remember this post where I mentioned something about Nintendo president Satoru Iwata’s approval rating? I promised to update you guys on his exact rating but it seems it’s improved over last year, now sitting at 80.64% compared to last year’s 77.26%. It seems as if improving Wii U sales seemed to have done the trick, so he may be sticking around for a few more years.

Miyamoto asked Kotaku readers what game they’d like - the results are in

Famed video game creator Shigeru Miyamoto asked Kotaku readers what game they’d like Nintendo to make for the Wii U and over 3000 people voted with a lot of them involving the word “Metroid”. The runner-up might surprise you: Pokemon Snap! Anyway, here’s the rest of the results:

  1. Metroid (2D or 3D, many call it Prime 4) (2019 votes)
  2. Pokemon Snap (858 votes)
  3. F-Zero (597 votes)
  4. A 3D Mario game (Galaxy 3 or Sunshine 2) (504 votes)
  5. A new Dungeons-and-Dragons style game with the GamePad player serving as dungeon keeper (256 votes)
  6. Mega Man Legends 3 (617 votes) (Not a Nintendo franchise, so not in the top 5)
  7. Buy Capcom (that’s not a game, though) (168 votes)
  8. Earthbound (396 votes)
  9. Star Tropics (72 votes)
  10. Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D (651 votes) (Wasn’t in the top 5 as it’s a 3DS game and not a Wii U game as Miyamoto asked for)

Which one would you like Nintendo to make? Check out some of the...

Shigeru Miyamoto to Skip Attending Japan Expo in Paris

Legendary video game creator Shigeru Miyamoto was due to attend the Japan Expo in Paris to host a master class in honor of the expo’s 15th anniversary, however Nintendo France has tweeted the following earlier today: “Nous avons le regret d’annoncer que Mr Miyamoto ne sera pas présent à Japan Expo pour des raisons personnelles liées à la santé de son père.”

It roughly translates that Miyamoto will not attend the show due to personal reasons related to the health of his father. So if you were hoping to catch a glimpse of him at the expo next month, you’re out of luck. Let’s wish Mr. Miyamoto’s father a quick recovery.

Super Mario Bros. speedrun breaks the world record

Speedrunner Blubbler has broken the speedrun record of 4.58.09 in this classic game, thanks to a new glitch in 8-2 which skips the post-flagpole animation, the world record is now 40 miliseconds shorter at 4.57.69!

Anyway, if you’d like to watch the run, you can watch it here.

However, the world record for completing the game is 4.57.31, which was done as a TAS or tool-assisted speedrun. TAS isn’t a normal speedrun - it uses emulators, save states, slowdown and other things that simply won’t be possible on a standard console. However, it means even the tiniest mistakes take just seconds to solve instead of having to restart the entire game. Emulators also do re-record so that only the best attempt out of many save states is taken. That run can be watched here.

Keeping the video game industry weird

“Nintendo isn’t one simple element of an overall gaming industry, I really think there needs to be a Nintendo genre, that’s almost its own entity.”

That’s what legendary video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto told the LA Times at E3 2 weeks ago. He feels that Nintendo needs its own genre as unlike many other publishers who try to be cool, they just have fun and do weird things, laughing at themselves.

“For a lot of us at Nintendo, it’s difficult to decide what cool is. In fact, it’s a lot easier for us to laugh at ourselves. It’s almost as if we’re performers. Our way of performing is by creating these fun, odd and goofy things.”
