New Nintendo Minute episode puts Mario Strikers Charged in the spotlight

If you don’t know, Nintendo Minute is a series by the guys at NoA (Nintendo of America) that allows two Nintendo employees, Kit and Krysta, to show off games. They’re short, 5-10 minute long episodes and are often pretty fun to watch. The latest episode was released yesterday and features Mario Strikes Charged (2007, Wii), a football game. The two hosts compete with one another in a game of football, done to coincide with the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil. I’ve already watched it, so if you can spare 7 minutes, watch it here

iPads and Android tablets dethrone the 3DS as the most popular gaming device in the UK

New data from Futuresource Consulting has revealed that iPads and the like have dethroned the 3DS as the most popular game. Almost half, to be precise, 44 percent, of UK children between 3 and 12 now own a tablet, with 30 percent of those aged three to four owning one. In addition, parents says that tablets are the most likely items they’ll purchase for their kids within the next six months – which is twice as likely as a smartphone or portable console.

The three different flavors of Hyrule Warriors, exclusive to Japan

  • The standard edition will come with a download code for either a courage, bravery or valour costume set, which has three different outfits.
  • The Premium Box set includes the courage-themed set mentioned above in addition to a download code for the wisdom set plus three more outfits.
  • The Treasure Box set will have both the sets and two unique “Power” costumes — exclusive to Amazon.jp and Koei Tecmo’s Gamecity website.

Link is part of the courage set and Zelda is part of the wisdom set. We can also assume that the costume sets will be available as DLC on the eShop. But the bigger question remains - will these stuff be out on the Western market too? I’ll get back to you ASAP.

Mario vs Donkey Kong and Mario Maker to be retail games?

A couple of placeholder boxarts for the aforementioned games have leaked and while they’re not final, they could seemingly confirm the existence of them as retail games. Nintendo has previously confirmed they will both launch on the Wii U eShop in 2015, though whether they’re exclusive to the eShop or being sold through both methods remains to be seen. The bigger question is though, is anyone willing to pay for a Mario level creator anymore? There are tons of free ones on the Internet…

The future of handheld consoles: will iOS and Android rid the 3DS once and for all?

10 years ago, it was different. People actually bought handheld consoles to play games on the go. Sure, you could play Snake on that Nokia you had, but to play console-quality, console-length games, you had to splurge on a PSP or a DS.

But today, people are increasingly turning to the iPad and Android tablets to play games. No longer are you confined to the blocky graphics of a mobile game, nowadays, the processors in top-end smartphones and tablets are more powerful than those found in the 3DS and Vita. Moreover, games often cost less than $10, while a 3DS game easily costs $40. So, is the mobile revolution set to kill handhelds once and for all?

The answer depends. If we go at this rate, yes. Every year, smartphones go from HD to Full HD to Quad HD and processors go from dual-core to quad-core to 64-bit. These smartphones get more and more powerful every year. But the 3DS is stuck...

From the 74th Nintendo Annual General Shareholders Meeting: Mario Kart 8 sells 2 million, Iwata re-elected President

Yesterday, Nintendo held a general shareholders meeting, where Nintendo EAD general manager Genyo Takeda spoke on behalf of boss Satoru Iwata, who was unable to attend due to a recent surgery. At the meeting, Nintendo announced that it had sold just over 2 million copies of Mario Kart 8 in just under a month, while a general majority of shareholders voted to re-elect Iwata as president. He was recently absent from 2014’s annual E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) but was featured in the company’s Digital Event where it announced a ton of new games.

Being re-elected President is comforting for Iwata, whose approval rating from shareholders was as high as 92% in 2011, dipped to 73% last year. Nintendo hasn’t released his approval rating this year yet, but that means Iwata will stay as president for at least another year. If he doesn’t do much to save the company, there might be a chance he...

Why graphics and power don’t matter

The original PlayStation did it. The PlayStation 2 did it. The Game Boy, The DS and the Wii all did it. They all proved the best graphics don’t equal the best sales or game experiences. I remember the day we got a PS2 - despite it clearly trailing in terms of graphics capability behind the Xbox and GameCube, it went on to sell 155 million units and become the best-selling game console ever. Meanwhile, the Xbox and GameCube both sold 24 and 21 million units respectively, a fraction of the PS2’s sales.

If we cast our mind back to 1989 though, the Game Boy had just been released. It was Nintendo’s first shot at a handheld that could play more than just one or two games. Nintendo used its experience from the Game & Watch to create a handheld with a monochrome screen, controls mimicking an NES controller and a cartridge slot. It went on to sell 119 million units (along with its Color...
